Parliament Approves Independent Auditor To Examine Auditor-General’s Accounts

Parliament has approved a recommendation for the appointment of an independent external auditor to examine the financial records of the Office of the Auditor-General.

The decision followed the adoption of a report by an Ad Hoc Committee during Parliament’s sitting on Tuesday, November 3, 2026.
The recommendation is intended to ensure that the financial operations of the Auditor-General’s Office are subjected to independent scrutiny, in accordance with Article 187 of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution.

The constitutional provision requires Parliament to appoint an auditor to examine and report on the accounts of the Office of the Auditor-General.

The development is significant because the Auditor-General’s Office plays a central role in promoting accountability and transparency in the management of public funds through audits of government institutions and public accounts.

The independent audit arrangement is expected to strengthen oversight of the institution and ensure that the office responsible for identifying financial irregularities in public institutions is itself accountable.

However, Parliament has not yet named the individual or firm that will undertake the assignment.
The necessary steps are expected to be taken to select an external auditor in line with the constitutional requirement.

The move has also renewed attention on the importance of checks and balances in public financial management, particularly the need for every public institution to operate under appropriate accountability measures.
