Patient Blood Management Awareness Week

Story by: Regina Bless

Patient Blood Management Awareness Week is observed to raise awareness about the importance of managing a patient’s blood effectively before, during and after medical procedures, particularly surgeries.

Patient Blood Management (PBM) is a patient-centred approach to healthcare that focuses on preserving a patient’s own blood, reducing unnecessary blood loss and ensuring that blood transfusions are used appropriately when medically necessary.

Blood plays a vital role in the human body. It transports oxygen and nutrients, fights infections and helps regulate body temperature. However, patients undergoing surgery, experiencing serious injuries or living with certain medical conditions may lose blood or develop low blood levels, making proper blood management essential.

The initiative encourages healthcare professionals to identify and treat conditions such as anaemia before surgery, minimise blood loss during medical procedures and carefully assess whether a patient needs a blood transfusion.

It is also important to understand that although blood transfusions can save lives, they may carry risks, including allergic reactions and other complications. This is why doctors are encouraged to make informed decisions based on each patient’s medical condition rather than administering transfusions unnecessarily.

Patient Blood Management also helps healthcare facilities use available blood supplies responsibly, especially in countries like Ghana, where hospitals can experience challenges with blood availability.

As we observe Patient Blood Management Awareness Week, healthcare professionals, hospitals and patients are encouraged to promote safe blood management practices and improve awareness of the importance of maintaining healthy blood levels.

The ultimate goal is to improve patient safety, reduce avoidable complications and ensure that every patient receives the right treatment at the right time.
