Police arrest 36 suspects following lynching of officer at Gindabour

The Ghana Police Service has arrested 36 suspects in connection with the death of a police officer who was allegedly attacked and lynched by a mob at Gindabour in the Sawla District of the Savannah Region.
According to preliminary investigations, the incident occurred on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, when the deceased officer, General Constable Redeemer Owusu, and his colleagues were conducting highway patrol duties along the Gindabour-Kenkyen community road.
The police team reportedly noticed a motorbike rider who, upon seeing the police vehicle, suddenly diverted into the bush. Suspecting that something might be amiss, the officers followed from another direction and found the rider unconscious on a bush road.
The officers picked up the rider and began transporting him to a hospital. However, he reportedly died while being conveyed to the facility.
News of the rider’s death subsequently triggered a mob attack on the police officers. General Constable Redeemer Owusu was killed in the attack, while other officers sustained varying degrees of injuries. The police vehicle was also damaged during the incident.
The bodies of the deceased police officer and the motorbike rider have since been conveyed to the Damongo Morgue for preservation and autopsy.
Following the incident, the Inspector-General of Police deployed investigators and intelligence officers to support the ongoing investigation and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
Reinforcement teams from Damongo, Bole, Sawla, Tuna and Kalba, together with the Regional Intelligence Team, have also been deployed to the area to strengthen security and maintain law and order.
The 36 suspects arrested in connection with the incident are currently in police custody assisting with investigations. They are expected to be put before the court after investigations.
The Police Command has strongly condemned the attack on its officers and assured the public that all persons found culpable will face the full rigours of the law.
