Police suspend concrete mixer truck operations in Accra and Tema over road safety concerns

The Ghana Police Service, under the auspices of the National Security Secretariat, has engaged owners and operators of transit mixer trucks, commonly known as concrete mixer trucks, as part of efforts to improve road safety and ensure compliance with road traffic regulations.
The engagement, held on Thursday, 27th August 2026, was led by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno. Discussions focused on concerns surrounding the operation of concrete mixer trucks and their impact on motorists, pedestrians, road infrastructure and the general safety of road users.
One of the major concerns raised during the meeting was the spillage of concrete and other materials onto roads by some of the trucks. Stakeholders noted that such spillages can obstruct traffic, create dangerous conditions for motorists and other road users, and contribute to the deterioration of road surfaces.
Operators were therefore urged to take greater responsibility during transportation and delivery operations by ensuring that concrete and other materials are properly contained and are not discharged or left on public roads.
As part of immediate measures to address the situation, the operators were notified that concrete mixer trucks would not be permitted to operate on roads within Accra and Tema from Friday, 28th August to Sunday, 30th August 2026.
The temporary restriction is intended to allow authorities to facilitate the clearing and cleaning of road surfaces affected by concrete and other materials.
During the suspension period, concrete mixer trucks are also not permitted to undertake delivery operations within Accra. Vehicles found operating in breach of the directive will be subject to appropriate enforcement action in accordance with the law.
The engagement forms part of broader efforts by the authorities to promote responsible road use and protect road infrastructure. It also highlights the need for stronger cooperation between regulatory agencies and private operators whose activities have a direct impact on public roads.
Representatives from the Ministry of Roads and Highways, the Ghana Highways Authority, as well as owners and operators of concrete mixer trucks, were present at the meeting.
The authorities are expected to continue monitoring compliance while working with industry stakeholders to find sustainable measures that will prevent road contamination and improve safety for all road users.
