Political Promises vs. Reality: What should citizens expect from government

Written by; Regina Bless

During election campaigns, political parties often make ambitious promises to win the support of voters. Citizens are promised jobs, improved roads, better healthcare, education and economic opportunities.

But after elections, the question becomes whether those promises can actually be delivered.

Citizens have a responsibility to hold governments accountable, but expectations must also be realistic. Governments operate within financial, economic and institutional limitations.

What matters is transparency. Citizens deserve to know what government promised, what has been achieved, what remains outstanding and why certain commitments may have been delayed.

Political accountability should not only happen during elections. Citizens must remain engaged throughout the government’s term.
