British comedian, actor and media personality Russell Brand has been found guilty of rape and sexual assault following a criminal trial at Southwark Crown Court in London.
The 51-year-old entertainer was convicted on Thursday, November 5, after a jury found him guilty of raping a 21-year-old woman in 2009 and sexually assaulting three other women in separate incidents between 2004 and 2009.
According to details presented during the trial, one of the incidents involved a young woman whom Brand met after one of his comedy performances in west London. Another involved an MTV employee who accused him of groping her at a bar in central London in 2004. He was also convicted over an incident involving a woman at her workplace in 2005 and another sexual assault in 2009.
However, the jury cleared Brand of two other rape charges and one count of attempted indecent assault after deliberating for approximately eight and a half hours.
Following the verdict, Judge Joel Bennathan indicated that Brand would face a significant prison sentence, with sentencing scheduled for Monday. He was remanded in custody after the convictions were delivered.
The Metropolitan Police described the case as an example of how individuals can use their fame, influence and public status to exploit others. Police also indicated that investigations into two additional rape allegations were continuing.
Brand became widely recognised in the United Kingdom through stand-up comedy, television and radio before establishing an international acting career. He appeared in several Hollywood productions, including Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Get Him to the Greek.
His conviction has attracted considerable international attention, particularly because of his public profile and the seriousness of the allegations that were examined during the trial.
The development has once again sparked conversations about accountability, sexual violence and whether celebrities should be held to the same standards as everyone else, regardless of their influence or popularity.
