Sarkodie Reveals Why Rapping In Twi Became His Greatest Strength
Story By: Zainab Ali
Award-winning Ghanaian rapper Michael Owusu Addo, popularly known as Sarkodie, has opened up about how his decision to rap in Twi became one of the biggest strengths of his music career.
Speaking in an interview in Kenya, the rapper explained that performing in his mother tongue allows him to communicate emotions more naturally and gives him the confidence to compete with musicians from different parts of the world.
Sarkodie disclosed that he initially pursued music in English but often felt he was competing at a disadvantage. His decision to embrace Twi, however, helped him discover a unique musical identity that eventually distinguished him from other artistes.
The rapper revealed that some people questioned his decision, expressing concerns that using a Ghanaian language could limit his international appeal.
However, he believes his achievements have demonstrated that musicians do not necessarily have to abandon their cultural identity to gain international recognition.
Sarkodie pointed to winning a BET Award and performing at London’s Royal Albert Hall as significant milestones that reinforced his belief in the power of his decision.
He also spoke about the interesting reactions of international fans who sometimes struggle to pronounce the Twi lyrics in his songs, particularly listeners outside Ghana.
According to him, such attempts are entertaining and demonstrate how far his music has travelled beyond the country’s borders.
The rapper further expressed hope that his journey would inspire young people and individuals with unconventional ideas to remain committed to their ambitions, even when others doubt their abilities.
He encouraged people not to allow criticism or fear of rejection to prevent them from pursuing what makes them different.
Sarkodie’s comments have once again highlighted the importance of indigenous Ghanaian languages in promoting the country’s music and cultural identity on the international stage.
