Ghanaian dancehall musician Shatta Wale has revealed that he has earned approximately $45,000 from gifts received during his TikTok livestreams, highlighting the growing financial opportunities available to entertainers through social media.
The musician, whose real name is Charles Nii Armah Mensah Jr., made the revelation during an appearance on rapper YPee’s podcast, The Real Ones. He explained that he initially hesitated to join TikTok because he viewed it as a platform mainly dominated by younger users.
According to Shatta Wale, he was already using Facebook Live to interact with his supporters when Ghanaian content creator Jackline Mensah repeatedly encouraged him to try TikTok Live. He eventually took the advice and discovered another way to connect with fans while earning money online.
The dancehall star said virtual gifts from viewers had generated approximately $45,000 for him. However, he did not specify the period over which the amount was accumulated.
Beyond the financial benefits, Shatta Wale emphasised the importance of maintaining relationships with supporters. He explained that he makes an effort to acknowledge people who use his songs to promote their own businesses, regardless of their location or occupation.
His comments offer a glimpse into how the entertainment industry is changing as musicians explore digital platforms alongside traditional income sources such as performances, music sales and streaming.
For emerging Ghanaian artistes and content creators, his experience also highlights the importance of consistency, audience engagement and finding creative ways to promote their work.
As TikTok Live continues to attract entertainers and entrepreneurs, Shatta Wale’s revelation is likely to encourage further discussion about the money creators can make online and the effort required to build an active audience.
