Shatta Wale Urges Government To Tackle Online Abuse Without Silencing Critics

Ghanaian dancehall star Shatta Wale has entered the conversation about online abuse, calling for measures to address harassment and defamation while protecting freedom of expression.

In a letter dated September 28, 2026, and addressed to President John Dramani Mahama, the musician raised concerns about insults, unverified allegations and harmful commentary circulating across digital platforms. The Ghana News Agency reported his appeal on September 29.

Shatta Wale argued that online abuse is not an isolated social media problem, noting that entertainment commentary and public discussion can contribute to a wider culture of personal attacks. Public figures, journalists, businesspeople and ordinary citizens can all become targets of harmful allegations and harassment.

The musician called for cooperation among Parliament, the judiciary, security agencies, media organisations and civil society groups to establish a clearly defined approach to serious online misconduct. He also emphasised the importance of due process and judicial oversight.

However, his proposal raises a question that extends beyond the entertainment industry: how can people be protected from online harassment without creating restrictions that discourage legitimate criticism? Freedom of expression allows citizens to question public officials, discuss celebrity conduct and express unpopular opinions, provided they remain within the law.

Shatta Wale also cautioned against measures that could effectively restore criminal libel laws, which Ghana repealed in 2001. His intervention has therefore placed two important issues side by side: the need for accountability for harmful conduct and the protection of lawful expression.

The debate is particularly relevant to entertainers whose personal lives and professional decisions are frequently discussed online. Any policy response will need to distinguish between legitimate public scrutiny and conduct that crosses legal boundaries.
