The Central Regional Police Command has arrested six suspects in connection with the violent rioting and attacks recorded at New Winneba on September 1, 2026.

The suspects have been identified as Kweku Kakraba, 52; Arko Thomas, 19; Samuel Tulasi, 19; Samuel Gyasi, 22; Emmanuel Okyere, 22; and Seth Osei, 22. They are currently in police custody assisting with investigations.

According to the Police, at about 10:40 a.m. on September 1, approximately 300 irate individuals allegedly armed with guns, stones, cutlasses and sticks from Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze and Gomoa Pomadze stormed New Winneba Township.

The group allegedly attacked residents, stores and properties belonging to natives of the area, resulting in injuries and significant damage to property.

The Police said about 15 injured persons, including one police officer, were sent to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba for medical attention.

Sadly, three persons were confirmed dead by the medical officer on duty.

During investigations at the scene, the Police also retrieved one locally manufactured single-barrel gun and one empty AAA cartridge.

In response to the incident, personnel from the Winneba Divisional Headquarters, Agona Swedru Division and Mankessim Division, including the IP’s special team, were deployed as reinforcements. Two armoured vehicles from the National Police Headquarters were also deployed to strengthen security in the area.

The Police have since implemented several measures to prevent further escalation. These include the establishment of six snap check points, intensified day and night patrols, and the deployment of personnel from the Police Intelligence and Professional Standards Directorate (PID) and Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to monitor developments.

The Command says the situation in the area is currently calm and under control, while investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the attacks.

The six suspects remain in police custody as investigators work to establish the full facts and identify other persons who may have been involved.
