Sway DaSafo Dies At 44 As Ghanaian And British Music Communities Mourn

British-Ghanaian rapper and producer Sway DaSafo, born Derek Andrew Safo, has died at the age of 44.

News of his death emerged on Thursday, September 17, with the MOBO Awards and people close to the artiste confirming his passing. He reportedly died at his home in Ghana. His cause of death had not been officially disclosed at the time of reporting.

Sway, who was born in North London to Ghanaian parents, became an important figure in British hip-hop. In 2005, he made history by becoming the first unsigned artiste to win a MOBO Award for Best Hip-Hop Act, before releasing his debut album.

His 2006 album This Is My Demo received critical acclaim and earned a Mercury Prize nomination. He was also known for songs including “Little Derek” and “Still Speedin’”.

Beyond his own music, Sway played a role in developing other talents through his production company, Dcypha Productions. His career also extended into acting, including an appearance in the British crime drama Top Boy.

Sway maintained a strong connection to his Ghanaian heritage throughout his career. His 2008 song “Black Stars” celebrated prominent Ghanaians in the diaspora, while he also collaborated with Ghanaian musicians.

Tributes have since poured in from musicians, entertainers and fans who have remembered him for his contribution to British hip-hop and his connection to Ghana.

Sway leaves behind a musical legacy that connected Ghana, Britain and the wider international music community.
