Technical University Lecturers Threaten Strike Over Unpaid Allowances

Lecturers at Ghana’s technical universities have threatened industrial action over delays in the payment of book and research allowances for the 2025/2026 academic year.

The Technical University Teachers’ Association of Ghana, TUTAG, has warned that its members could withdraw their services if the outstanding allowances are not paid by September 22, 2026.

The development comes at a time when institutions are preparing for the new academic year, raising concerns about the possible impact of industrial action on teaching and other academic activities at technical universities.

The book and research allowances are intended to support lecturers in their academic and research-related responsibilities. The delay in payment has therefore become a major concern for the association.

TUTAG’s warning places a deadline of September 22 before possible industrial action, meaning the situation could develop further if the outstanding payments are not resolved.

The association’s position also puts pressure on the relevant authorities to address the payment issue before it affects academic activities across the technical university sector.

For students, any disruption to academic work could have consequences for lectures, examinations and other activities depending on how the situation develops.
