Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has served as the Reviewing Officer at the graduation parade for Cadet Course Intakes 33, 34 and 35 at the Prison Officers Training School in Fumso, where she commissioned the graduates as Assistant Superintendents of Prisons.

The ceremony was attended by the Minister for the Interior, Hon. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak; the Director-General of Prisons, Mrs. Patience Baffoe-Bonnie; and other government and security officials.

Speaking at the event, the Vice President emphasised the important role of the Ghana Prisons Service in maintaining safe custody of inmates while preparing them for successful reintegration into society.

She stressed the need for humane conditions within the country’s correctional facilities, noting that government had introduced several measures to improve prison administration and the welfare of inmates.

Among the interventions highlighted were an increase in the daily inmate feeding allowance, the commitment to complete the remand prison project at Nsawam and the commissioning of a 300-capacity prison facility in Damongo.

She also pointed to the Community Service Act, 2026 (Act 1175), and the Prisons Service (Parole) Regulations, 2026, as important legal frameworks intended to improve justice administration, rehabilitation and the reintegration of offenders into society.

Other developments include the establishment of a Prisons Health Directorate, upgrades to prison infirmaries and the provision of agricultural inputs to support farming activities within correctional facilities.

Addressing the newly commissioned officers, Professor Opoku-Agyemang reminded them that the authority entrusted to them comes with a responsibility to uphold the dignity and rights of every person in their custody.

She emphasised that discipline and firmness in prison administration must always be balanced with fairness, compassion and respect for human dignity.

The Vice President congratulated the graduating officers and commended their instructors and supervisors for their dedication, training and the successful organisation of the graduation parade.
