World Atopic Eczema Day: Raising awareness about a common skin condition

Written by; Regina Bless

World Atopic Eczema Day is observed each year on September 14 to raise awareness about atopic eczema, a common inflammatory skin condition that can affect people of all ages.

Atopic eczema can cause dry, itchy and irritated skin, and symptoms may come and go over time. For some people, the condition can significantly affect sleep, concentration, school, work and everyday activities.

The day provides an opportunity to encourage greater understanding of eczema and to challenge misconceptions surrounding the condition. Atopic eczema is not simply a matter of poor hygiene, and people living with it should not be subjected to stigma or embarrassment.

Managing eczema often involves identifying and avoiding personal triggers, maintaining appropriate skin care and following advice from qualified healthcare professionals. Because symptoms and triggers can vary from person to person, seeking professional medical guidance is important, particularly when symptoms are persistent or severe.

In Ghana and across Africa, greater public awareness can help people recognise symptoms early and seek appropriate care. Families, schools, workplaces and communities can also play an important role by showing understanding and supporting people living with the condition.

World Atopic Eczema Day is therefore more than an awareness event. It is a reminder that people living with eczema deserve accurate information, proper care, understanding and support.

This World Atopic Eczema Day, let us spread awareness, reduce stigma and encourage healthier conversations about skin health.
