World Pharmacists Day: Celebrating the professionals behind safe medication use

Story by: Regina Bless

World Pharmacists Day is observed every year on September 25 to recognise the important role pharmacists play in healthcare and to raise awareness about how they contribute to safer and better use of medicines.

Pharmacists are healthcare professionals who do much more than dispense medicines. They help patients understand how to take their medications correctly, explain possible side effects, check for potential interactions between medicines and provide guidance on the safe use of prescriptions and other health products.

The work of pharmacists is especially important because using medicines incorrectly can sometimes lead to serious health problems. Taking the wrong dose, mixing certain medicines or using medication without proper guidance can create unnecessary risks.

Pharmacists also play an important role in promoting responsible self-medication. When people experience minor illnesses, a pharmacist can provide advice on appropriate treatment and recommend when it is necessary to seek further medical attention.

For young people, World Pharmacists Day is also an opportunity to understand that pharmacists are an important part of the healthcare team. Rather than viewing the pharmacy simply as a place to buy medicine, people can make use of pharmacists’ professional knowledge and ask questions about their medications.

This year’s celebration is therefore a reminder to appreciate pharmacists and the essential role they play in protecting public health.

As we mark World Pharmacists Day, let us recognise their commitment to helping people use medicines safely, effectively and responsibly.
