World Teachers’ Day: Celebrating the people who shape future generations

Story by: Regina Bless

World Teachers’ Day is observed annually on October 5 to recognise the important role teachers play in educating, inspiring and shaping the lives of learners around the world.

Teachers do more than deliver lessons in classrooms. They help students develop critical thinking, discipline, confidence, creativity and the skills needed to participate meaningfully in society. For many children, a teacher can also be a source of encouragement, guidance and support during difficult times.

The day also draws attention to the challenges teachers face, including heavy workloads, limited resources, large class sizes and the need for continuous professional development. Supporting teachers with the right working conditions and resources is essential to improving the quality of education.

In Ghana, teachers remain central to the country’s efforts to improve education and equip young people with the knowledge and skills needed for the future. Their work contributes not only to academic development but also to the social and personal growth of children and young people.

World Teachers’ Day therefore provides an opportunity for students, parents, governments and communities to appreciate educators and acknowledge their contribution to society.

As teachers are celebrated today, the message is clear: supporting teachers means investing in education, and investing in education means investing in the future.
