World Vegetarian Day

Story by: Regina Bless

World Vegetarian Day, observed every year on October 1, is an opportunity to raise awareness about vegetarianism and encourage people to learn more about plant-based eating.

Vegetarian diets generally focus on foods such as vegetables, fruits, beans, lentils, whole grains, nuts and seeds, while avoiding meat. People choose vegetarian diets for different reasons, including personal beliefs, health considerations, environmental concerns, animal welfare and cultural preferences.

A well-planned vegetarian diet can provide important nutrients and may include a wide variety of healthy foods. However, people following a vegetarian diet should pay attention to nutrients such as protein, iron, vitamin B12, calcium and omega-3 fatty acids, particularly when animal products are completely excluded.

World Vegetarian Day is also a chance to appreciate the wide range of plant-based meals available across different cultures. In Ghana, foods such as beans, kontomire, vegetables, groundnuts and other plant-based ingredients can form part of nutritious meals.

The day does not necessarily mean everyone must completely stop eating meat. Rather, it encourages people to learn about vegetarian choices, explore nutritious plant-based meals and make informed decisions about their diets.

As we mark World Vegetarian Day, it is a reminder that food choices can be diverse, and a balanced diet can include many delicious and nutritious plant-based options.
